Who is OpenLUT for?
OpenLUT is for filmmakers(cinematographers, directors, editors, etc.) who want to create a show LUT for a shoot or color grade some frames to see what their footage is capable of.
Is it free? Are my images uploaded anywhere?
OpenLUT is 100% free for everyone and you don't need an account to use it. Nothing is uploaded. All processing happens locally in your browser, so your footage never leaves your computer.
Do I need to know color science to use it?
No. If you've edited photos in apps like Lightroom, the controls will feel familiar. Under the hood, OpenLUT uses industry standard ACES color management and scene-referred grading tools, so your grade is built on the same foundation professionals use. You can just focus on the creative grade.
What image formats does OpenLUT support?
OpenLUT supports TIFF, EXR, JPEG, and PNG images. For the best results, bring in scene-referred images, either TIFFs in your camera's log encoding or scene-linear EXRs. OpenLUT supports input color spaces for most cinema cameras, including ARRI, RED, and Sony. If you don't have access to log or linear images, you can still bring in regular display images, like a standard JPEG or PNG, and grade them as usual.
Can I really do professional color grading in a browser?
Professional color grading has requirements that a browser cannot fully satisfy like dedicated I/O hardware, 10-bit video output, calibrated reference displays, controlled viewing environments and much more. If you already know you need those things, OpenLUT probably isn't the tool you're looking for. It's for filmmakers who want an easy way to experiment with color without needing access to a professional grading system or learning complex software.
Is OpenLUT a replacement for DaVinci Resolve or a colorist?
No. OpenLUT is not competing with Resolve, Baselight or professional colorists. It's for people who don't have access to a Resolve setup, or who find it overwhelming, and just want to grade and have fun. It can even help you work better with your colorist by showing them the look you're after.
